Company Overview
A global nutraceutical manufacturer specializing in dietary supplement ingredients, premixes, and finished products operates multiple facilities across the United States. The company supports manufacturing, logistics, and research operations that rely on reliable connectivity between locations.
Challenge
The company’s locations were connected using traditional IPsec VPN tunnels across multiple internet circuits. The design lacked proper redundancy and intelligent path selection, leading to several operational challenges:
- Inefficient failover between circuits
- Unpredictable routing behavior during outages or congestion
- Complex VPN configuration and management across sites
- Limited visibility and control over application traffic between locations
The organization needed a more resilient and scalable approach to site-to-site connectivity that could better utilize available internet circuits.
Solution
Because each location was already equipped with Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, we redesigned the network to leverage Fortinet SD-WAN capabilities.
Key improvements included:
- Migrated from static IPsec VPN routing to an SD-WAN overlay architecture
- Utilized multiple ISP circuits for active-active connectivity
- Implemented dynamic path selection policies based on link performance
Results
- Improved redundancy across multiple internet circuits
- Cleaner and more predictable routing between locations
- Better traffic steering and control over application paths
- Simplified management of inter-site connectivity
- Increased network reliability for critical business operations
